Surface Area and Volume Project - Design a Cake

Add a little sweetness to math class!

This is a fun and educational project that will have students thinking about surface area and volume, all while designing and creating their own cake! Students will love learning and applying their geometry skills to create an eye-catching, real-world project.

Students will begin this project by ordering custom cake pans for their creation. Cake pan shapes include rectangular prisms, cylinders, cones, and spheres. They will then calculate the surface area (for icing) and volume (for the cake batter) of the completed cake design.

Once students have figured out the dimensions of their cake, they can begin to draw a blueprint of their cake. The step-by-step instructions on how to do so are provided in the project. The final design is especially exciting as students get creative by adding decorations, frosting, and colors to their cakes.

At the end of the project, students will have successfully applied their knowledge of surface area and volume in a creative way by designing and creating their own cake. It is an excellent resource for teachers who want to make math fun while teaching important concepts at the same time.
